NWHikers > prettymountain  > Hiking > Grindstone~Lake Edna Larch Hike, ALW
Scott and I went hunting for larch trees on Sunday, with a forecast calling for 20% chance of rain. We decided, sort of at the last minute, to try for the summit of Grindstone Mountain at Chatter Creek off the Icicle River Road in Leavenworth.

The weather is absolutely miserable, and we forgo the summit in the clouds. But we find instead a gorgeous larch meadow walk, and make it to Lake Edna, where Scott surprises me by jumping in. Crazy guy.

We did around 6000 feet gain, and maybe 12 miles?? Not sure.

The trail starts out flat..although we start out on the wrong trail, realizing later that it has been rerouted, and the directions are wrong. We never did find the real trailhead.

We eventually stumble across the trail anyway, by going down an abandoned road and abandoned trail.
It quickly heads up hill, getting quite steep, in a Ponderosa and Western White Pine forest.
The trail gets brushy at times, and we are soaked by the time we get to the meadows.
We almost turned around in the wet misery. But I'm glad we made it ~ a lot of pretty fall colors up here.
Scott soaked on the trail.
It is truly a miserable wet day. 20% chance of rain. Huh. More like 100%.
But we keep going... and finally start to see larch trees around 6000 feet.
And the trail IS pretty.
A pretty waterfall right next to the trail.
