Here we are, just like last year! Doc and I at the trailhead. 6 AM. Bright sun, but cold out.
2 hours up to Summerland backcountry camp area. Here is our destination, the glacier's before Mt. Tahoma, the peak at right.
We're still on the way up, but have to go down a little bit and then back up. Scott and Doc boot ski down.
On my way up! Beautiful day, beautiful views.
We make it to the top of the ridge, our final destination, at about 9400 feet, and scramble up the rock ridge to take in the view. It's much steeper here than it looks in the picture.
Mt. Adams to the south, and Mt. Hood far off in the distance.
Doc takes a rest on the rocky ridge.
Mt. St. Helens.
Me and Mt. St. Helens
It is not easy scrambling on this choss pile with these clunky plastic boots on!
Here we all are.
Now it's time to ski!!!
What am I doing lifting my ski? That's bad.
Scott loses a ski! Luckily it does not slide down.
According to the 'ID Me' group over at Flickr, this is some sort of prostrate high-altitude lupin - or lupine. The flowers appear similar to the prolific lupine blooming in alpine meadows ~ kind of daisy like. http://www.flickr.com/groups/idplease/discuss/72157594211982666/#comment72157594212004052
Looking good, Doc.
Saw a herd of Mtn Goats again, same valley, just like last time. See them on the snow and rock?
View of Summerland meadows, and Emmons glacier, Mt. Rainier.
Ski boots on the outside on this excellent trail.
Scott jumps in the stream on the way back.
